Il 4 Febbraio 1946 John Eckert e John Mauchly registrano il brevetto dell'Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC).

Nel 1973 un giudice federale americano ha annullato il brevetto di Mauchly e Eckert, stabilendo che l'ENIAC derivava dal computer di John Atanasoff e C. Berry, costruito nel 1939. La loro batteria di valvole poteva risolvere, grazie al sistema binario, equazioni a 29 variabili.
